Top ten Semantic Web documents

Google’s PageRank was an important contribution to information sharing on the Web. As the number of Web pages began to swell in the mid 90’s it became harder and harder to find the most useful results in a typical search. I think PageRank solved the problem and continues to offer a practical solution in spite of spammers and their link farms and splogs.

In developing the Swoogle Semantic Web search engine, we recognized the need for techniques to rank the results of searches for ontologies, terms and individuals based on their degree of use. As we worked on the problem we convinced ourselves that we could not use PageRank directly, but had to go back to the underlying rational and adapt it to a model of how an agent might navigate the Semantic Web. Our ISWC 2005 paper, Finding and Ranking Knowledge on the Semantic Web, discussed some initial results, including OntoRank — a ranking algorithm designed for ontologies.

Li Ding has further refined the model as part of his dissertation research. This figure shows the ten highest ranked Semantic Web documents based on the most recent model used by Swoogle. The directed links represent the rank flow between nodes. The details of the figure and the ranking algorithm will be in Li Ding’s forthcoming dissertation.
